Run-On Sentences

Setting

In a work of narrative, the setting is the location, date, and time in which a story takes place. Setting helps to initiate the main backdrop and setting for the story. Setting can apply to a culture, historical period, geographic location, or date. Setting is considered one of the fundamental components of fiction.


Setting in popular culture: The film The Dark Knight’s setting is a present day Gotham City. Gotham city’s dark and depressing atmosphere set the stage for the story in the Dark Knight. It is also set in a modern day city similar to New York City.


Setting in literature: In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, the narrative occurs in the fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama in the mid-1930’s. This provides a backdrop for the events of the story to occur.


Setting in general: The setting of the 2012 Summer Olympics was London, England. London hosted the Olympics and provided the geographic and cultural background for the games.
